Research goals

At our institute there are two full professors Christian Huck and Günther Bonn covering a wide spectrum of different analytical techniques. Christian Huck is the head of the spectroscopy group focusing on NIR, ATR-FTIR, Raman and NIR/MIR/Raman imaging spectroscopy. Furthermore, liquid chromatography (LC), capillary electrophoresis (CE), capillary electrochromatography (CEC) hyphenated to mass spectrometry (MS) are applied for detailed analytical investigations, providing a powerful research platform as a reference tool for the establishment of spectroscopic calibration/validation models. Special research interest is in principle the miniaturization of sensor technologies. For trace analytical purposes this attempt is combined with analyte enrichment following the principled of solid-phase extraction (SPE) and/or Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), respectively. Advanced chemometric methods, e.g., including neuronal networks, are applied in combination with quantum chemical methods, being powerful when it comes to interpretation of spectral data. This approach gives strong support in optimizing spectroscopic methods for individual applications.

All these methods are applied in the field of agronomics, foodomics, phytomics, bioanalysis, enrivonmental analysis. Christian is editor in chief for Spectrochimica Acta A, editor for Journal of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (JNIRS).

Facilities:

The laboratory is equipped with a benchtop NIR (Büchi NIRFlex) and miniaturized (Viavi, Thermo Phazir, Scio, Tellspec, Southnest) spectrometers, ATR-FTIR benchtop (Perkin Elmer) and hand-held device (Agilent), NIR/MIR imaging spectrometer (Perkin Elmer Spotlight), MIR/NIR imaging camera, Raman imaging (Bruker Senterra) and handhled (Bruker Bravo) instruments. There are several LC, CE, CEC systems, mass spectrometers (Triple-Quad, Q-TOF, MALDI) and automated robotic systems (Phynexus).
